چکیده

We introduce a three-dimensional, computationally feasible, mesoscopic model for snow crystal growth, based on diffusion of vapor, anisotropic attachment, and a semi-liquid boundary layer. Several case studies are presented that faithfully emulate a wide variety of physical snowflakes. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 82C24. Secondary 35R35, 60K35.

Modeling snow-crystal growth: a three-dimensional mesoscopic approach.

We introduce a three-dimensional, computationally feasible, mesoscopic model for snow-crystal growth, based on diffusion of vapor, anisotropic attachment, and a boundary layer. Several case studies are presented that faithfully replicate most observed snow-crystal morphology, an unusual achievement for a mathematical model. In particular, many of the most striking physical specimens feature bot...

Three-dimensional numerical simulation of temperature and flow fields in a Czochralski growth of germanium

For a Czochralski growth of Ge crystal, thermal fields have been analysed numerically using the three-dimensional finite volume method (FLUENT package). The arrangement used in a real Czochralski crystal growth lab included a graphite crucible, heat shield, heating device, thermal insulation and chamber including two gas outlets. We have considered two cases for calculations, which are configur...

A Cellular Model for 3-Dimensional Snow Crystallization

Snow crystals are intriguing because they exhibit both symmetry and remarkable diversity. Previous studies have used 2-dimensional models to approximate snow-crystal growth. Here generalizations to three dimensions are considered. In particular, a cellular arrangement of cells is updated according to local rules that involve the identification of receptive cells and averaging values from non-re...

MODELING SNOW CRYSTAL GROWTH II: A mesoscopic lattice map with plausible dynamics

We present a local lattice model for the evolution of snow crystals that combines diffusion-limited aggregation with anisotropic attachment kinetics and an idealized quasi-liquid layer. Despite a voluminous modeling literature, this is apparently the first approach that successfully captures the essential form of core and tip instabilities, branch faceting, and other aspects of real snow crysta...

Numerical computations of faceted pattern formation in snow crystal growth.

Faceted growth of snow crystals leads to a rich diversity of forms with remarkable sixfold symmetry. Snow crystal structures result from diffusion-limited crystal growth in the presence of anisotropic surface energy and anisotropic attachment kinetics. It is by now well understood that the morphological stability of ice crystals strongly depends on supersaturation, crystal size, and temperature...
